Why you should cultivate Self Awareness…

Update: this was originally posted April 9th, 2018. I am no longer selling Joenals

It was 2011… I was deeply in a rut. I was gaining weight, I was in my early 20s and hadn’t kept a job yet… I was failing in community college…

I wasn’t doing well at all.

I decided to start journaling. In April 2012, I bought a journal and decided to journal every night. For three years I kept my promise to myself.

During those three years I lost tons of weight, got off all my medication, rebooted my body through exercise and diet, lost my virginity, gained my first girlfriend, became president of two clubs, graduated with my associate’s degree with a 3.8 GPA, started traveling and entered university.

Whoa.

That’s a full 180. That’s a massive change.

You’re probably thinking “hey Joe, is this going to be a woo woo here’s the magic ointment to getting everything you ever want without any work post?”

No. It’s not easy.

Nothing worthwhile is easy.

But there’s good news for you…

It’s simple.

In addition to other qualities you need to cultivate self-awareness. In order to figure out why the hell you’re feeling all off and icky and depressed, you need to explore your inner motivations, your insecurities, your day-to-day habits…

What makes you tick? What do you desire, past all the insecurities, deep in your soul?

What is your true value you seek to bring to this world?

What obstacles stand in your way you need to dissolve so you can focus on your highest good?

Action is important, but before action comes self awareness.

This came for me in the form of talk therapy and journaling. For others it can come in the form of talking with friends, or through examining their connection to their characters as they act in a play or a movie… Or meditation…

There are many ways to cultivate self awareness. I promote journaling since it’s free, anyone can do it, it’s easy and it’s one of the most effective ways, especially since you can look back in the journal later and see how far you’ve come.

I prefer journals which make me feel proud to write in them. Neat, visually appealing, nice.

As part of my journey I desired to find something I love to do and could transmute into a living by giving value to the world.

A passion.

An act I loved doing and would love doing over and over again just for the sake of doing it.

I found this passion in crafting. I’ve crafted my whole life. Since I was a kid, dragging around a blanket like Linus from the Peanuts Gallery, I learned to sew.

I drew next, and embossed letters to family with my mom as a child. I had an origami phase… And a rock carving phase… And a knitting phase… And a screenprinting phase… And…

Almost any craft you can think of, I’ve tried.

So I decided to turn crafting into a living. But what to make?

I decided to make journals. To bookbind journals. Nothing gave me more growth than the self awareness I cultivated through self-reflection.

In fact I owe this new stage in my life to my self-awareness! And not only my self-awareness but the tools which helped me achieve and maintain it!

I offer you an opportunity to be a part of your own inner revolution. Your own awakening…
